For NHS Foundation Trust University Hospitals Sussex, as a Haematology/Oncology nurse you’ll be playing a significant maternity role, alongside other cancer mater nurses providing a wide range of nursing services to caregivers and their clients.

The responsibilities of this area involve delivering treatment to patients admitted to the Haematology/Oncology inpatient ward and providing care to patients treated at the Haematology Day Unit allowing nurses to develop in the use of SACT and treatments related to haematological cancers.

The position will allow you to work with various treatment modalities. This would include chemotherapy, care of patients undergoing stem cell transplants and palliative care amongst many other services.

You’ll be an integrative member of the multidisciplinary team providing expert advice and care to patients in collaboration with Clinical Nurse Specialists and/or Advanced Nurse Practitioners as well as the Palliative Care Team and the Acute Oncology Team.

In this position, you will take part in every step of the care for the patient including injecting chemotherapy into patients, caring for patients who were injected and any other family members who require care.

It would also be essential to ensure all patients understand the care they receive including proper informed consent and taking appropriate steps before receiving healthcare services.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Haematology/Oncology Nurse, your primary responsibilities will include:

Inpatient and Outpatient Care: Both inpatient and outpatient patients will be under your care and a standard of care as determined will be set in place so that every patient is treated uniquely and compassionately in accordance with their needs.

Administration of SACT: Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapies, IV drugs and blood products once trained. You must have knowledge of the drugs which are used to treat cancer and also the side effects that they may cause.

Patient Protection: You will get to be in charge of action that pertains to the provision of any chemotherapy treatment and that is a great consideration in nursing practice. You will be dealing with any complications that arise or any reactions that necessitate possible measures to be done.

Professional Nursing: Provide nursing care to patients in a comprehensive and holistic way and consider all the aspects concerning the individual including the patients’ family. Help them through difficult times, which could include but is not limited to bereavement and palliative care.

Should I be interested in making a career in the domain of oncology or haematology? I suggest that pursuing a career in oncology or haematology is worth considering provided you have possessed certain qualities or attributes. I have no formal hospital practice but have worked at a palliative care unit where I was supposed to look after terminal cancer patients. For someone interested and passionate about cancer and hematology care, it is really a handicap.
I would not be so idiosyncratic to say that it is significantly important to involve a person with exceptional communication ability as this is more or less a routine coming across a very skilled set of professionals and associates.
If there is a single person profession that is congested with barriers and challenges, it is oncology nursing – one has to juggle stress and balance to be tough in emotionally strenuous environments.
One is a bit surprised how much knowledge of technology is required to manage spreadsheets and clear file records including medical ones.
Availability of time and convenience includes evenings, holidays and weekends and adding to it, travelling with residents and occasionally managing patients adds to making this role more challenging.
I’d prefer not to bring it too strongly but if people have a working driving license, it would help significantly.
