This article contains a list of the best PPAs in Oyo State, Nigeria. If you’re a prospective Corper and you’re not sure about the best PPAs in Oyo State that are ideal to serve, then this article is for you.

Oyo State, situated in southwestern Nigeria, is renowned for its appealing qualities, as testified by Corps members who have shared positive experiences in the region. Choosing to be posted in Oyo is considered a good decision, given its status as an inland state with Ibadan as its capital, the third most populous city in Nigeria and formerly the second most populous in Africa. The state shares borders with Kwara to the north, Osun to the east, Ogun to the southwest, and the Republic of Benin.

Predominantly inhabited by the Yoruba people, Oyo State is often referred to as the “Pace Setter State.” Its history includes the powerful Oyo Empire, which ruled the region from approximately 1300 to 1896. The modern city of Oyo, established in the 1830s and known as “New Ọyọ,” stands as a remnant of the imperial era, distinct from the former capital to the north, ‘Old Oyo’ (Ọ̀yọ́-Ilé), with the Alaafin of Oyo maintaining a ceremonial role.

Notably, Oyo State is recognized as the site of Nigeria’s first university, the University of Ibadan, founded in 1948. The state’s economy is predominantly agrarian, with Shaki in the west being described as the state’s breadbasket. Key crops such as cassava, cocoa, and tobacco play a significant role in Oyo State’s economic landscape.

Oyo State spans approximately 28,454 square kilometers, ranking 14th in size. Its topography is characterized by old, hard rocks and dome-shaped hills, gradually rising from around 500 meters in the southern part to reaching heights of about 1,200 meters above sea level in the northern region. Several principal rivers, including Ogun, Oba, Oyan, Otin, Ofiki, Sasa, Oni, Erinle, and Osun, originate in this highland.

Natural features in Oyo State include the Old Oyo National Park, which was once a habitat for the endangered African wild dog, Lycaon pictus, though it is believed to have been locally extirpated. The state experiences an equatorial climate with distinct dry and wet seasons and relatively high humidity. The dry season spans from November to March, while the wet season extends from April to October. The average daily temperature fluctuates between 25°C (77.0°F) and 35°C (95.0°F) throughout most of the year.

Oyo State comprises 33 Local Government Areas (LGAs), namely Akinyele, Egbeda, Ibadan North, Ibadan North-East, Ibadan North-West, Ibadan South-West, Ibadan South-East, Ibarapa Central, Ibarapa East, Ido, Irepo, Iseyin, Kajola, Lagelu, Ogbomosho North, Ogbomosho South, Oyo West, Atiba, Atigbo, Saki West, Saki East, Oluyole, Ogo Oluwa, Surulere, Orelope, Ori Ire, Oyo East, Ona Ara, among others. Prospective Corps members assigned to Oyo State are allocated to various Places of Primary Assignment (PPAs) situated within any of these LGAs for their service.
