Disadvantages

While PBL offers benefits such as improved problem-solving abilities and engagement, it requires instructors to invest more time in assessing student learning and preparing course materials compared to traditional lecture-based learning (LBL). In PBL, students actively participate in solving real-life problems, which involves extensive research, data analysis, and collaboration. As a result, instructors need to dedicate significant time to assessing each student’s progress, evaluating their problem-solving skills, critical thinking abilities, and application of knowledge to practical situations. This individualized assessment process takes more time than the conventional methods of evaluating an entire class simultaneously.

Additionally, PBL involves student presentations where they share their research findings and insights with the class. This presentation component adds to the time requirements, as each student needs to be given an opportunity to present their work. Unlike LBL, where the instructor delivers information to the entire class at once, PBL necessitates allocating time for individual presentations.   1. Traditional Assumptions Of The Students

One disadvantage of problem-based learning (PBL) lies in the traditional assumptions of students. In many traditional educational settings, students are accustomed to viewing their teachers as the primary source of knowledge. They are used to being passive recipients of information, expecting their teachers to provide them with all the necessary knowledge and answers. This mindset can pose a challenge in the initial years of PBL.

When students transition to problem-based learning, they are expected to take on a more active role in their learning process. They are required to independently explore and seek out information, critically analyze problems, and develop their own solutions. However, due to their previous educational experiences, students may struggle to adapt to this new approach. They may initially lack the ability to engage in open-ended inquiry and may find it difficult to generate their own questions and ideas without explicit guidance.

One disadvantage of problem-based learning (PBL) is the challenge it poses for evaluating students’ achievements. In traditional lecture-based learning, assessment methods often revolve around written examinations with objective questions. These modified assessment methods may include written examinations with modified essay questions that assess the students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Peer assessments, where students evaluate each other’s performance, and self-assessments, where students reflect on their own progress, are also incorporated to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the students’ learning outcomes.

The need for these diverse assessment methods in PBL can be seen as a disadvantage because it requires instructors to develop and implement new evaluation techniques. This process may demand additional time and effort from the instructors, as they have to familiarize themselves with these alternative assessment approaches and ensure they are fair and effective in evaluating the students’ achievements.
