About River State

Rivers State, situated in the Niger Delta region of southern Nigeria, emerged in 1967 following its separation from the former Eastern Region. It shares borders with Imo and Anambra to the north, Abia and Akwa Ibom to the east, and Bayelsa and Delta to the west. The state’s capital, Port Harcourt, stands as a bustling metropolis and a pivotal hub for Nigeria’s oil industry.

Boasting a diverse population of 7,492,366 in 2023, Rivers State is the 7th most populous state in Nigeria. Its ethnic tapestry includes groups like Igbo, Ijaw, Ogoni, Ikwerre, Ogba, Ekpeye, and Kalabari. The state is renowned for its linguistic richness, hosting 28 indigenous languages and dialects such as Igbo, Ijaw, Ikwerre, and Ogoni.

Geographically, Rivers State is the 26th largest state and is characterized by a network of rivers, most prominently the Bonny River. The state’s economy revolves around a thriving petroleum industry. Despite increased revenue from oil, mismanagement and corruption have hindered rapid development and effective poverty alleviation efforts.

The early 2000s saw a surge in cult-related killings within Rivers State, posing a challenge to its social fabric. In 2019, Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike declared the state a Christian state. Despite these challenges, Rivers State is recognized as one of the fastest-growing states in terms of modern infrastructure and urbanization in Nigeria, marking a trajectory toward progress and development.

Rivers State has about 23 local government areas. Some of them are Abua–Odual, Andoni, Asari-Toru, Eleme, Etche, Gokana, Khana, Ogu–Bolo, Okrika, Opobo–Nkoro, Oyigbo, Tai, among others.
